Our Approach
Safety & Environmental
Safety is personal here. We are a family business, and we look after each other, so safety and environmental control are part of the plan and the schedule from the first meeting, not a policy added at the end. Our crews train every year through an in-house, authorized trainer program, and every job starts with a site-specific plan.
At a glance
Safety built into the plan.
Our approach
Safety in the plan
Safety personnel are involved before the first piece of equipment moves.
Training
Trained every year
OSHA certifications and an in-house authorized trainer program, renewed every year.
Environmental
Regulated materials, handled to the plan
Abatement and decontamination are scheduled ahead of demolition.
Recognition
Recognized for safety
The 2024 Michael J. Casbon Safety Award, presented at the NDA convention.
Our approach
Safety is built in before the first machine moves.
Safety is part of project planning, field operations, and execution, from pre-demolition activities through closeout. Experienced safety personnel take part in planning, every job starts with a hazard assessment and a site-specific plan, and the owner reviews that plan before work begins. For the owner, that means a predictable site and a record of how it was run.
Every successful project begins with every employee returning home safely.
What that means
- Safety in the plan. Safety personnel are involved before the first piece of equipment moves.Hazard assessments and pre-task planning are developed and reviewed before work begins.
- Compliance. We work to federal, state, and local regulatory and project-specific requirements, including EM 385-1-1 on federal work.Requirements are designed into the plan before field work starts.
- Field accountability. Safety oversight is carried out in the field, by the people running the work. The people running and executing the work are vital to the success of our Safety and Health Program.
- Daily practice. Job Safety Analysis review is part of daily operations, with a goal of an injury-free workplace.Hazard assessment continues every day, not only at the start of the job.
Training and credentials
Trained every year, by our own authorized trainers.
Our team maintains OSHA certifications and trains every year through an in-house authorized trainer program, so the people on your site are trained by people who know how we work.
Credentials held
Across our supervisors and field leaders, credentials include:
- OSHA 30-hour construction safety
- 40-hour HAZWOPER
- EM 385-1-1 safety training
- NDA Certified Demolition Supervisor
- Competent person training
- State asbestos supervisor licenses
Environmental control
Regulated materials handled to the plan.
- Abatement and decontamination are scheduled into the project, ahead of demolition.Regulated materials are removed before demolition begins.
- Licensed supervision. Certified supervisors oversee environmental work, and field personnel are HAZWOPER trained.Certified supervisors lead the environmental work in the field.
- Regulated material handling follows OSHA, EPA, and applicable state requirements.OSHA, EPA, and state rules guide how each material is handled.
- Waste management. Waste is profiled, manifested, and followed to approved disposal, with laboratory partners providing testing and documentation.Waste is profiled and tracked from the site to approved disposal.
- Dust and erosion controls protect neighbors and the site.Controls are in place to protect neighbors and the site.
Safety recognition
2024 Michael J. Casbon Safety Award.
Target Contractors received the 2024 Michael J. Casbon Safety Award, presented at the NDA convention. Kerry Nazario, our Corporate Health & Safety Director, accepted it on the company’s behalf.
Shortlisted for a 2026 World Demolition Award
Ahtna-Target JV is shortlisted in the Explosive Demolition category for the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center project.
Project safety record
- NASA Marshall Space Flight Center: implosion of an 11-story building completed with zero recordable incidents and no lost time.Plans for nine areas of the work were written before the building came down.
- Lashkowitz High Rise, Fargo: 33,000 labor hours with zero OSHA incidents, lost time, or vehicle accidents. The implosion was the last step in a schedule built around abatement.
- Clemson University: six buildings demolished on an active campus with zero lost-time incidents.Work continued around students, faculty, and adjacent facilities.
- Spartanburg Courthouse: demolition beside an operating courthouse with zero recordables.Public safety and continuous operations drove the plan.
